Pope Francis appointed Mons. Gianfranco Gallone, 59, Apostolic Nuncio in Uruguay, who until now represented the Holy See in Zambia and Malawi.
His appointment was communicated this Tuesday, January 3, 2023 by the Vatican Press Office.
Bishop Gallone succeeds Bishop Luciano Russo, appointed Secretary for the Pontifical Representations by Pope Francis in September 2022.
Born in Italy, Bishop Gallone was ordained a priest in 1988.
He has a degree in Canon Law and Liturgy. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in the year 2000.
Since then, he has served in the nunciatures of Mozambique, Israel, Slovakia, India and Sweden, and also served in the Relations Section of the Secretariat of State at the Vatican.
On February 2, 2019, Pope Francis named him Apostolic Nuncio in Zambia. Three months later he was also appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Malawi.
He received episcopal consecration from him in May 2019, from Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State.
